OK. Let me get this straight, you must be thinking that Artemis Fowl is the good guy working against the bad guy. Right? NO. A big, fat, juicy "NO" . Artemis Fowl is a Criminal Mastermind. He is a super intelligent criminal. Give him a dillema to solve and he will solve it within seconds. He is an Irish child prodigy. I mean, he is TWELVE!!!
When Artemis discovers that there is a fairy world underground === No wait. Before that let me tell few things about him and his parents. Artemis's father mysteriously disappeared when Artemis was but, just a nimble little child. His mother, so shocked and afraid became a mentally unstable person.
Now you must be thinking : 'Who took care of young Artemis?' that's easy it was his butler whose name is well... Butler. As this book says and I quote (pg. 15) " The Butlers had been serving the Fowls for centuries." also (pg.16) " Once a Fowl and a Butler were put together, they were paired for life." and (pg. 16) " Artemis was the closest thing Butler had to a friend, and Butler was the closest Artemis has to a father."
Let's get back to the story. When Artemis discovers that there is a fairy world underground Artemis makes a scheme to get his hands on their gold. He wants the gold, as it was his father's incomplete task. His father knew there was a fairy world and he wanted their gold for some cause but, he died and that's why Artemis want to complete his father's incomplete task.
This though, is not an easy task he does not even know where exactly the fairies live underground. To find out need the Book which is sort of like a holy book. In the sense, the Bible for Christians, The Quran for Muslims and the Bhagavad-Gita for Hindus. The book is only with the fairies and do not expect the fairies to be with wings and all these are not those kind. I am talking about the Sprites, leprechaun type of fairies.Only with the help of the book will Artemis get to know what they do, whether or not they come out to the human world. Then with that info he will be able to capture a fairy to get the gold.

Now I cannot tell you more than this or you would know the whole story and you would not read the book. This is a really good book and you have to read it.
