Blue Whale ~ In The Belly Of The Beast

As a student of psychology, I have an immense interest in anything to do with the subject. Since the Blue Whale game has become such an international phenomenon, I decided to write about it.

We all know what it is- a game designed to promote suicide amongst troubled teenagers. The game consists of a set of 50 tasks that range from as simple as listening to music that the curator sends to as odd as waking up at 4:20am to as dangerous and sitting atop heavy machinery. Have you ever wondered how the game got its name? The mighty blue whale is a creature that isolates .and strands itself in order to commit suicide. Quite a trait.

When the creator- Philipp Budeikin plead guilty, he was questioned regarding the purpose of the game. He said that the purpose is uncomplicated, to cleanse the world of weak minded people. He claimed that these people are a waste of space and would eventually amount to nothing. So better help them kill themselves rather than waiting for them to eventually do it or lie around contributing zilch to society.

Looking at it from a psychological point of view, by gaining a little bit of insight on the creator, I realised that he has a background of psychology and sound engineering. However, he was kicked out of college and claims to be bipolar- which explains his perverse and determined behaviour. At first glance, the combination of sound engineering and psychology, seems odd but he integrated the two disciplines and made it lethal, to train the minds of these vulnerable teenagers. For example, people who are made to wake up at 4:20 are obviously sleep deprived, which tends to distort logical and rational thinking. Also, the music sent by the curator instills subconscious, negative thoughts; all to slowly prepare you to take the final leap- literally. Although immoral, one has to admit that it must have taken no less than a genius to create this game.
